Owner, Founder, Lead Guide
Dean from Los Alamos, New Mexico is a World Extreme Skiing Champion and ski-film star who pioneered Alaska heliskiing in the early 90s with Doug Coombs and opened up the Chugach for skiers and riders from around the world. He's likely achieved more big mountain first descents than anyone. Dean won Avalanche Educator of the Year in 2011 and 2012 and was selected by his peers in Powder Magazine as one of the most influential skiers of our time. He won Powder's Best Line in 2012 for his descent of the Dragon's Back Spine on Meteorite Mountain in Valdez. Dean's dedicated to teaching avalanche education and backcountry protocols during his annual Steep Life Protocols presentations. He lives year round in Valdez with his wife Karen and three children.
Based in Colorado’s Rockies, Jamie began his career working at ski areas patrolling and directing avalanche control - while competing and coaching big mountain skiing. He's a professional member of the American Avalanche Association, completed National Avalanche School, and has attended International Snow Science Workshops. Skiing has lead Jamie abroad to explore the Argentine Andes, New Zealand's Southern Alps, France’s La Grave and Italy’s Stelvio National Park. However, the inspiring terrain and epic snow of Alaska’s Chugach Range held a special allure, encapsulating the challenges and joy of true big-mountain skiing amidst scenery that can’t be found anywhere else on Earth. Guiding with H20 allows him to share his enthusiasm for these experiences with others.
Director of Communications, Heli-Ski Guide
Born in Colorado and a resident of the Methow Valley in the North Cascades, Josh joined H2O Guides in 2012. He has skied and explored for the last 35-consecutive years in mountain ranges including the Chugach, Rockies, Cascades, Sawtooth, Teton, Wasatch, and Sierra Nevada. Josh has a diverse skill set that enables him to seamlessly transition from communications to operations to Landing Zone. He has worked as a PR account executive in Seattle; freelance writer, product reviewer, and photographer; reporter and features writer for the Wyoming Business Report; editor at the University of Wyoming's College of Agriculture and Natural Resources; and ski instructor for seven seasons at Mission Ridge Ski & Board Resort, The Summit at Snoqualmie, and Breckenridge Ski Resort.
Pete comes to H2O with a diverse guiding background, from rock to rivers, sailboats to skis. As a Midwestern boy eager to play in the mountains, Pete taught himself rope skills by aid-climbing trees and building zip lines in the forest. From his first guiding experience with rock climbing, Pete found more ways to engage people of all walks of life while whitewater rafting and ski patrolling. He loves to teach Swiftwater, Avalanche, and Mountain Craft classes to help clients hone their skills and travel safely in the backcountry. He currently spends nine months a year on snow working as an avalanche forecaster and mountain guide in New Zealand, Antarctica, Japan, and Alaska. When he is not teaching, listening, and laughing in the mountains, Pete finds time for the beach and family.
Born and raised in Utah's Wasatch Mountains, and now residing in Seattle, Drew joined the H2O Team in 2016. He is a professional athlete for Eddie Bauer and Giro (among others), a contributing author for Powder and Backcountry magazines, and is a two-time Freeride World Champion. Drew has chased endless winter with double seasons between the Northern Hemisphere and Chile, where he guides and instructs, throughout the past decade. He loves all types of skiing, including guiding heli skiing in the Chugach surrounding Valdez, fast icy groomers, European steeps, and long ski tours in the wilderness.
Born of the Rockies in the great state of Montana, Ryan was enthralled with everything snow and mountains at an early age. Everything that gave him a rush and took him high into the glorious abundance of peaks is his passion from dirt bikes and crotch rockets to snowmobiles and splitboarding the backcountry, although snowboarding the steep and deep will always remain his number one greatest passion. This passion has led him all over the world in search of powder from the Andes of Argentina, the Alps of Switzerland, Austria, Germany and France, to the Himalayas of northern India. It was this same passion that led him to employment with H2O guides where he discovered the true "holy grail" of the steep and deep in the heart of the Chugach, a place where this passion was set fire and continues to grow exponentially!
Greg's passion for the mountains developed in the hills of New England. After completing a bachelors degree in environmental science, he headed west in search of bigger mountains and more snow. Greg settled in Kirkwood, California, where he spends his winters as a ski patroller and avalanche forecaster for the resort, and summers as a ski and alpine guide on the Cascade volcanoes and in the Sierra Nevada mountains. He skis on average 200+ days a year, and always wants to ski more. Greg is certified through Level 3 avalanche training, a graduate of the National Avalanche School, and AMGA trained in both the ski and alpine disciplines. He loves the challenge of maximizing the client reward when conditions are difficult, and is constantly seeking those perfect days when it all comes together for clients and guide alike.
We’re always seeking talented, passionate individuals to join our team. If you’ve got skills in graphic design, marketing, operations, communications, public relations, fundraising, and/or guiding, then we want to speak with you. Send your resume to firstname.lastname@example.org.
H2O Guides has helped develop winter tourism in Valdez, Alaska since 1991, creating opportunities in outdoor recreation in a town known for its oil and fishing industries. We’re more than a heliski business. We conduct year round education, training, and outreach. Now we’re launching Valdez into the future with the development of an aerial tramway that will create one of the the highest vertical trams in North America and open an area the size of several Whistler/Blackcomb ski areas for year round outdoor recreation and education.
